Animal Abuse Laws

Feline Health, Yowls No Comments »

Inspired by reading a post at Dr. Andrew Jones’ blog, I started doing a little research on animal abuse laws. Took most of the day. I’m sure I could dedicate a lot of time in this. But here’s a little afore as to why I am reluctant to get too involved animal abuse and shelter/rescue efforts personally.

Spay Central TorontoI worked at a local pet store a few years ago. It suddenly closed due to the owner not paying lease monies, among other things. But the important part, for this post, is that co-worker ran a non-registered charity cat shelter. The store owner allowed this shelter to adopt out these abandoned cats in the store. It’s why I’ll never be able to personally (that means, in person) be able to help at a shelter or rescue site. Some of the stories and situations in which these poor cats were surrendered or found scarred me for life. To the point where I dreaded going to work because I may hear or see something worse. My heart just broke over and over every time I saw a new cat. Most of the cats in the store were abandoned kittens, ripped from their mother way too early to ever be able to grow up and function normally, emotionally. Even though these cats now had food, water and a warm, safe place to be, that was about the extent of their existence. No one to love them or cherish them. And minimal care (only basic poor quality food and veterinary care) due to lack of finances. It was a horrible, horrible experience for me.

Con-Politics

Health and Nutrition, Yowls No Comments »

Now, I’m not a politically minded person. I truly try to avoid politics because if I knew too much I’d be an opinionated politically minded person! I’m sure you get my meaning. I would simply prefer to spend my time and energy focused on good things and good acts. That’s also why you won’t find me watching the nightly news or reading the daily newspaper. Not on purpose anyway.

But sometimes, sometimes I do find things worth my full and complete attention. There are some things truly worth the effort. Stopping Bill C-51 is one of those things.

Bill C-51I am not going to go into a long winded rant. Nor am I going to tell anyone they *must* take action or write their local MP (which I have done, actually). What I do want to do is make folks aware of Bill C-51 and how it may effect your rights, your choice, to use or even obtain natural health products in Canada.

Until today, I didn’t know Bill C-51 existed. Bill C-51 is shocking and appalling. If you are not aware of Bill C-51, please go read about it. Share a link on your blog or webpage. Email your MP. DO something. Say something. I did.

Work Safety

Current Mood:Angry emoticon Angry

My husband called me about 3am to let me know his hand had been caught in the printing machine at work. Talk about screaming fear. Hand injuries are *painful* and I should know. I have a plastic knuckle myself. He said he didn’t think anything was broken, but I still insisted on taking a cab (we have just the one car) to the hospital to meet him.

Firstly, I was amazed to find that the cab had an atm debit swipe IN the cab. Here I was thinking madly about where the closest bank machine was. It wasn’t a problem. Circle Cab in Whitby, ON has debit machines btw. Anyhow, the 2nd amazing thing was how quickly my hubby was seen. He had called me at 3am, and we are now back home at 5am.

Long story short, he has not broken anything, according to the x-rays. But we are to make sure he follows up with our regular doctor within 48 hours. Soft tissue damage to his wrist and index/middle fingers and knuckles. Thankfully nothing too serious. But it sure could have been worse.

Personally, I’m beyond livid. I *know* my husband’s place of work is slack with safety. And sure enough, the folder slot (whatever it’s technically called I haven’t a clue) was reported faulty 3 weeks ago. Of course it’ll be fixed NOW. I’m fuming. Things better stay ok with my hubby’s hand too. Or they may yet hear from me and a lawyer.

Union shop, slack safety and guys who should be retired but aren’t. It’s enough to give me nightmares. My hubby is a printer and those machines are HUGE. Those machines can take a man’s hand or fingers in seconds. Freaks me right out.

But hubby is OK. Thank gawd.
