New Job in SEO
As some of you may know, I recently started a new job in SEO (search engine marketing). It’s a go to the office and sit at a desk kind of job, though attire is business casual. I love it! I’m an a place where other people speak my language. That of page ranks and search engine placement, link building and keyword choosing. What a fabulous thing to talk to people about your so far, secret little passion, without eyes glazing over in incomprehension or disinterest. What is really a kick is doing all this and getting paid, and paid well, for it. I’m still waiting to be pinched.
I’ve been doing SEO and learning SEO for the last 10 years I suppose. More on a “how did they do that” kind of way, self taught. I didn’t think I was very marketable with no formal training, no piece of paper saying I had a degree or even certificate in SEO in any shape, way or form. So I never really pursued a “real” job in the field.
What I didn’t realize was that no one is formally trained as a SEO because such a thing does not exist. There are no universities or schools that provide search engine marketing degrees, but I’m sure there will be. Sure, you can take an online course or read an e-book online, but again, it’s do it yourself, learn yourself.
So for the last week I’m finding out that I really do know a fair bit about search engine marketing. For those that know the field, that may be a broad statement. Without going into too much detail (that very well may glaze over some eyes), my current job focus is link building. I help get your site ranked high on the Google search engine (among others). But I’m also learning so much more. Tips and tricks, methodology, trade secrets, (which I’ve signed my life away on a non-disclosure contract so don’t ask, I’ll hafta kill ya) and SEO lingo (which has been amusing, I’m sure, for my co-workers). I don’t know the lingo, so when someone asks me “do you know ….” and I don’t know it as being called “such and such”. So in a convoluted kind of way, I realize that yes, I have done that… just didn’t know it was called that! It’s been fun nevertheless.
So now that I know what I know (and am still learning!), I am going to get back at this blogging thing. You’ll see some more regular posts from me. Maybe a few tips too
