Rune and the Bus

I was up late rereading a book (The Dragonbone Chair, Tad Williams) as most avid readers do with their collection. Consequently, I was still in bed around noon. The hubby woke me up to say he’d brought home brunch.

I was glad to be awakened as I was having a horrible (to me) dream. I’ll tell it, in part, because it helps explain my husband’s evil sense of humor. I have purebred cats, cfa registered manx, and I love them dearly. Of course then, my worst fear would be losing one of them, no matter how (though Mr. Cheeky, the hubby, pointed out HE should be the one I fear to lose most). And so, in the dream, my most cherished red headed manx boy was frolicking in the back yard. This alone is disturbing because I do NOT, ever, let my cats outside. But there he was, playing in the back yard as happy as can be. The next thing I know he’s crossing traffic on the busy street behind the house. And there are people waiting at the bus stop. Frightened of some vehicles passing, my beloved cat jumps onto the bus. I’m running as hard as I can to flag down the bus, who stops for me. And I leap on without a dime to pay for the ride. I tell the driver I simply want my cat, which is crouched beneath the seat. I will gladly pay the fare and then some after getting my cat back. The driver does not stop, but carries on his route until he sees some police cars along the road. He tells them my story, points to the cat, and the police take me into custody! I Suppose for non-payment of bus fare. Who knows what becomes of my poor cat. The police take me home and tell me to call some number to get my cherished cat back. At this time, my husband returns home from work with me bawling my eyes out, phone in hand. I tell him the whole horrible story.

And this is where he wakes me in reality. As we eat our lunch he says, “I know what we can do. We’ll get collars for the cats and on Rune’s we’ll put a bus pass.” And he laughs! Thinking he is so clever. I am, of course, not amused and announce I’ll never tell him a dream of mine again if he’s going to mock me about it.rune3may08

A little while later, while he’s out on the balcony being a nosy neighbor, he urgently calls me out. Come here, quick! And so I go to look. He points out at the bus and says, “Oh my god, isn’t that Rune getting on the bus! What should we do?” To which I replied with a roar of exasperation. Of course my cat is not about to hop a bus and disappear. It’s that I fear to lose my cat and his going off on a bus is *imagery* of that fear of loss. I couldn’t help but laugh at my husband making fun of my dream. But I still *imagined* pushing the cheeky brat off that damn balcony!

    Hey Shan,

Glad to see you on the blog again. I have been so bad over a year and not a comment from me. Life is moving way too fast to have time for anything! Bella had to have a “C” two weeks ago, I know your feeling with your dream. I told the doctor just do what you have to; just save her. Still beating myself up wondering if I did the right thing! I actually got to go back in post op, following her surgery and sat with her for over an hour. Not 5 feet from where they were doing a neuter, so unreal. Just wish the clock would move a little slower so life could be realized not a brief mamory in the wind.

You have a high baloncy so be easy on the hubby! At least he brought you lunch!

Glad to hear everything went ok with Bella! Scary stuff. But all cat lovers know the cats come first
